Systematics & Evolutionary Biology
Research Groups and Centres
Systematics & Evolutionary Biology, within the school of Biological Sciences, is contained within two major research centres:
- Australian Centre for Evolutionary Biology and Biodiversity (ACEBB)
ACEBB forms part of the Environment Institute and is a nationally recognised centre of expertise in systematics, evolutionary biology and biodiversity science.
The Centre is performing as one of the top research groups in the University of Adelaide. A unique strength of ACEBB is the relationship between the SA Museum, State Herbarium and Bioknowledge, South Australian DEH and the University of Adelaide. These excellent facilities are seen as the best practice model in Australia.
For information about research and projects please visit http://www.adelaide.edu.au/environment/acebb/.
- Australian Centre for Ancient DNA (ACAD)
ACAD forms part of the Environment Institute and is a world-leading ancient DNA research centre, and the only one of it's kind in the Southern Hemisphere. ACAD uses genomic and paleontological data to reconstruct evolutionary history, and study the impacts of climate change, human evolution and the evolution of disease. ACAD actively develops new platform technologies in genomics and bioinformatics in collaboration with international research leaders in the US and Europe.
Researchers in ACAD retrieve genetic records from ancient human, animal, plant and sedimentary material to study evolution and environmental change through time. The centre's key interests include molecular studies of population genetics, paleogenomics, paleoenvironments and paleoecology, phylogeny, phylogeography, molecular clocks and bioinformatics.
